This is a Black Swallowtail butterfly.
It is mostly black, yellow, and blue.

Black Swallowtail Butterflies have
black wings with pretty yellow spots.
They look like tiny pieces of sunshine
flying around!
They have four wings. The wings are
made up of tiny scales.
These scales are yellow and white.
The swallowtail butterfly has an
interesting life cycle.
First, they start as tiny eggs. Then, they
hatch into caterpillars. Caterpillars eat
a lot and grow big and chubby.
After eating, the caterpillar wraps itself in a
cozy blanket called a chrysalis. Inside, it
changes into a butterfly!
Now, the butterfly can fly and find yummy
nectar from flowers. To drink the nectar, it will
use its proboscis.
You might be asking, “What is a proboscis?” It’s
like a special straw to drink from the flowers.
